Simon Edmonds,
Clinical Physiologist

Where do you work and what do you do?

I work within Starship | Te Whatu Ora national paediatric respiratory and sleep service as a clinical physiologist, where I am responsible for diagnostic test performance and interpretation supporting patient treatment pathways, and contributing to service development and operational oversight.

What does a good day at work look like?

A good day is one where the service runs efficiently, patients are seen in a timely manner, and the team is well supported. It also includes having the space to address system improvements rather than just managing day to day pressures.

What do you enjoy about being an APEX Delegate?

Being an APEX Delegate provides the opportunity to advocate for my colleagues, to ensure fair processes are followed, and contribute to improving working conditions. It adds a layer of accountability and representation that benefits both staff and the wider service.

“Being an APEX Delegate provides the opportunity to advocate for my colleagues.”

How have you found your involvement with APEX over the years? What makes us different and relevant?

My involvement with APEX has been constructive and grounded in practical outcomes. What makes APEX different is its strong specific understanding of allied health and technical professions and its ability to engage meaningfully at both an individual and system level. It remains relevant because it stays connected to the realities of the workforce.

What do you think APEX should focus on for AST professions in the future?

APEX should continue to focus on workforce development, recognition of advanced scope roles, and ensuring sustainable staffing models. There is also a need to strengthen positioning of AST professions within clinical governance structures, particularly as service demand grows. The career framework will need guidance and APEX team are the ones to do it!

What do you like to do when you are not at work?

Outside of work I spend time with family, keep active with football and tinker with technology.
