We are the specialist union for medical laboratory workers in New Zealand.

Over 1500 scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, assistants, couriers, and interns choose to be members of APEX.  For over 40 years APEX has represented medical laboratory workers.

We know exactly how important laboratory workers are.

Our members work together to ensure our laboratories and the profession of medical laboratory science are left in a better place than how we found them. Which is why we continue to push for improved working conditions and respect for our essential pathology workforce.

From Kaitaia to Invercargill, our collective agreements cover all of New Zealand’s medical laboratory workforce including in:

  • Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora
  • New Zealand Blood and Organ Services
  • Awanui (including Southern Community Laboratories, Auckland Labtests, Taranaki and Northland Pathology)
  • Pathlab (Waikato, Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane)
  • Sonic (Medlab Palmerston North and Whanganui and  Gisborne T-lab)

APEX’s Medical Laboratory Worker Division represents the interests of lab staff during:

  • Collective agreement negotiations
  • Pay equity processes
  • Health and safety matters
  • Restructuring, redundancy, contracting out or proposed privatisation
  • On the National Laboratory Engagement Group (NLEG)
  • Advocacy and advice to HNZ and the Ministry of Health on improving laboratory services

The laboratory division secretary is Rachel Roth and the division president is Bryan Raill. We have 80 workplace delegates who are trained to look after your rights at work. You can find your delegate in the list below.

Pay Parity for Corporate Lab Workers

Laboratory workers are essential to New Zealand’s healthcare system, yet many in private labs are paid significantly less than their public-sector counterparts. This campaign highlights their vital role, ongoing industrial action, and the push for fair pay through pay parity.
