About APEX

We are the specialist union for all allied, scientific and technical employees in New Zealand.

We recognise that professionals working in New Zealand’s health sector need the collective strength that comes from being represented together, while retaining representation and collective employment agreements that reflect the day-to-day realities of their distinct profession.

Today, APEX represents over 6,000 allied, scientific, and technical health professionals across New Zealand. Our structure gives each professional group its own division and representation, and members are supported by advocates who understand their work.

The breadth of agreements we negotiate, alongside our wider research and workforce advocacy at a national level, reflects our commitment to specialist representation with a strong collective voice.

Your Collective Agreement

APEX negotiates over 50 collective agreements, from large multi-employer collective agreements covering the whole country to small single-employer agreements in private hospitals, laboratories, Te Whatu Ora, and private sector agencies and NGOs.

Collective bargaining through APEX gives you a stronger voice, expert representation and reduces the inherent power balance between you and your employer.

During bargaining:
• Your delegates attend formal negotiations.
• Professional Advocates represent your interests.
• Your voice is heard, every time.

What's in it for you?

One size does not fit all.

That's why with APEX every profession has its own division, so your voice is heard where it matters.

  • Better pay & conditions through collective bargaining.
  • Protection from unfair treatment at work with support and representation when you need it.
  • Support during change with guidance through restructuring, redundancy, or contracting out.
  • Access to on-the-ground delegates who are trained, approachable, & here for you.
  • Your voice is raised by collectively putting AST issues into news cycles and onto the political agenda.
  • Strength in numbers. When a workforce bargains together, lasting change can be made.
